2024, Svalbard
This mother polar bear had her 7-month-old cub with her, full of energy, bouncing around, wanting to play. But mama was tired. She trusted us completely and lay down right in front of us, occasionally opening one eye to check on her cub… and us.
As a wildlife photographer, there’s no greater honor than being trusted like that by such magnificent animals.
Ironically, just five minutes after I took this photo, my 400mm lens developed an electrical fault that somehow took out both of my camera bodies. Unbelievable. But thankfully, the shot and the memory survived. And that made it all worth it.
