Whales passing over shallow reef in clear water are rare and fleeting. Humpbacks have such strong connections with their calves and are in almost constant contact with one another. As we drifted over the reef, I made my way slowly down so as not to disturb them, just hovering in the blue and watching. I held my breath, took photos and watched as the pair slowly made their way up to the surface for air. I took a few photos, backed away, and made my way up as well. Sometimes everything lines up just right and it’s moments like this that make long days in the ocean worth it.
