This active shield volcano is known for its long-standing lava eruptions. About 27 mi / 50 km in diameter, it has an elliptical caldera some 1/3 x 1 mi / 0.7 x 1.6 km wide, with two pit craters, both of which have had lava eruptions. It is believed that the lake of lava has been active for at least the last 100 years, making it one of the longest known historic eruptions. The lake of lava in the south pit crater has solidified at the surface, leaving only a small incandescent flow remaining.
