2022, Kenya
A unique feature of the Devanagari script—the script in which Hindi is written—is the horizontal line that runs above each letter, called a shirorekhā.
One evening in the Maasai Mara, we came upon a rare scene: a mostly clear sky interrupted by single, striking lines of clouds. It immediately reminded us of a shirorekhā. Nearby, a mating pair of lions lay resting. We positioned ourselves carefully, hoping for the right moment.
When the male lion eventually stood up, aligning almost perfectly beneath the cloud, we knew we had something special. And then, just as if on cue, he yawned.
Later, when we reviewed the photo we decided to use some artistic license and call the image Devanagari Roar.
