November 2024, Solio, Kenya
"At the start of the 20th century, around 500,000 rhinos roamed around the world. That number has now dropped to around 28,000 rhinos. The white rhino population which had fallen to about 100 of them in the early 1900s had bounced back impressively to around 18,000. It's a long and tiresome battle but the southern white rhino is still standing proud and unbowed.
I was keen to frame the rhino in a manner that only the head and especially the distinctive horn are rim lit. I was fortunate that at the same time, as the rhino turned, it threw up some dust into the light, further adding the effect in the image."
