This image was taken in Liwonde National Park, Malawi
Marcus Westberg is one of African Parks’ main photographers, and recently spent a week documenting the translocation of elephants in Malawi on their behalf.
A personal note from the photographer: "I was fortunate enough to be able to photograph the recent elephant transfer from Liwonde National Park to Kasungu National Park. In total, around 250 elephants have been darted, captured, transported (by truck) and then released. Partly to alleviate population pressure in Liwonde, partly to re-populate Kasungu. The field work has taken close to five weeks, though much more has gone into the planning and organizing.
Watching the team in action (while trying not to trip on them) was incredible. If anything is a coordinated team effort, this is, and I loved being there.
Like rhino dehornings, it’s unfortunate that we have to resort to such things, but quite impressive that we are able to when the need arises. With so much at stake, and with our planet’s remaining wild places and creatures under so much pressure, we need to make use of (almost) every innovative tool in the box. That we can repopulate places where animal species have either gone locally extinct or had their numbers greatly reduced is pretty fantastic. As long as we don’t completely destroy ecosystems, re-wildling often remains a viable option."
